100 percent of the proceeds will be donated to Moffitt Cancer Center, specifically this year as part of a $1 million pledge toward a brachytherapy suite there. The brachytherapy procedure, which uses more targeted internal radiation instead of external radiation, is highly effective on multiple cancer types, produces fewer side effects and offers faster recovery times than other treatments. Moffitt is the only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center in Florida.

The Gonzmart Family Foundation donated $110,000 from last year’s event. In just five years, this annual event has raised $460,000 for Moffitt.

The all-ages entry fee is $25 per person through June 13, and $30 June 16 (day of.) Children under 12 are free, but must register with a parent or guardian. Event-day sign-up plus bib and shirt pickup opens at 7 a.m. at the restaurant on Sunday, June 16.

The course starts and ends at Ulele, at 1810 N. Highland Ave., in Tampa Heights. This is a family-friendly event, and parents are encouraged to bring their children and walk together. Or, you can pick up the pace and jog.

“Richard’s Father’s Day Family Walk/Jog” was created by fourth generation caretaker and Columbia Restaurant Group President Richard Gonzmart. His goal is to raise awareness of the disease and the need for testing, as well as to help fund cancer research and treatment.
