Columbia Sarasota Named One of Southern Living’s “Favorite Alfresco Restaurants

Columbia Restaurant in Sarasota on St. Armands Circle Named
"One of Southern Living Magazine’s Favorite Alfresco Restaurants”

SARASOTA, Fla., April 21, 2010 - - The Columbia Restaurant in Sarasota on St. Armands Circle is featured in Southern Living Magazine as one of their favorite restaurants for dining alfresco.*

According to the article, "Sarasota takes its cue from Paris when it comes to outdoor dining. Bistros spill onto the sidewalks around St. Armands Circle, a tropical isle just a bridge away from mainland Sarasota. It’s one of the prettiest spots in Florida. This district tops our list of most romantic spots to dine at midday or by moonlight."

Southern Living recommends The Columbia on St. Armands Circle, saying, “Tampa may have the original Columbia (Florida’s oldest restaurant, opened in 1905) but Sarasota has the prettiest. Huge windows connect the hand-painted tile dining room to a sprawling covered patio. This space marries the intimacy of the indoors with the fresh air outside.

The menu spotlights Spanish fare – paella packed with fresh clams, shrimp, and mussels; bean soup with chorizo; hot Cuban bread. Everything goes well with a pitcher of fresh sangria. If you go before mid-May, you can still order fresh stone crabs – chilled, steamed, or broiled with Latin spices. For a fun local favorite, try the “1905” Salad (a chef salad so good it’s been on the menu that long), and your waiter will toss it tableside. Finish your meal with stout and full-bodied Cuban-style coffee.”

The Columbia Restaurant in Tampa’s Historic Ybor City was founded in 1905 and is Florida’s oldest restaurant. Additional locations include St. Armands Circle in Sarasota, the Historic District in St. Augustine, The Pier in Downtown St. Petersburg, Sand Key on Clearwater Beach, Central Florida''s town of Celebration, the Columbia Café on the Riverwalk in Tampa and the Columbia Restaurant Café at Tampa International Airport. All Columbia locations are owned and operated by 4th and 5th generation members of the founding family; except for Columbia Restaurant Cafe at Tampa International Airport which is operated in partnership with HMSHost.
