ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla., October 28, 2009 – The Columbia Restaurant in St. Augustine’s Historic District has completed an $1,100,000 capital improvement.
“After 26-years in St. Augustine, we had a number of areas that we need to make renovations to, including a complete renovation of our kitchen, and the purchase of all new, state-of-the art energy efficient kitchen equipment. We also remodeled our CR’s bar and dining area while adding a climate-controlled, 2,200 bottle wine room,” said Richard Gonzmart, fourth generation family member and president. In addition to the remodeling, custom light fixtures imported from Sevilla, Spain were installed. The Gonzmart family opened the St. Augustine Columbia in July, 1983.
The Columbia Restaurant was founded in Tampa’s historic Ybor City in 1905, and today is the oldest restaurant in Florida. Other locations include St. Armands Circle in Sarasota, the Historic District in St. Augustine, The Pier in St. Petersburg, Sand Key on Clearwater Beach, Central Florida''s town of Celebration and the Columbia Café at the Tampa Bay History Center in Channelside. All Columbia Restaurants are owned and operated by 4th and 5th generation members of the founding family.
